Finding the Perfect Evening Dress

Finding the perfect evening dress can be one of the biggest challenges known to mankind (or more appropriately womankind). Before even starting the search you must clarify what the exact dress code is. For example you buy a beautiful (but pricey) ballgown for a Christmas night out and your colleagues all turn up in jeans. That’s not even the worst case scenario. Imagine you are at a wedding and have on the same frock as the bridesmaids.

Once you know how formal your dress should be then you can start with the fun. Depending on your figure there will be styles that suit and styles that you must shy away from. The strapless dress seems to be everywhere right now, with huge choice of fabric and colours. Perfect for a young slender girl, not so much for a more mature lady who enjoys frequent chocolate eclairs. If choosing strapless then a shrug or shawl may be a must. This can match your dress or be another colour and fabric.  Other necklines with similar problems would include halterneck and those that expose your navel.

When deciding length it is important to bear in mind your own proportions. Long evening dresses tend to drown shorter women and conversely can be too short for taller ladies.  Mini dresses are best left to those with short torsos (unless you are planning to stand on the spot all night and not attempt any stairs).  Calf length evening dresses will make your ankles look bigger, irrelevant of how tiny they may actually be.

Whatever style of evening dress you prefer it is important to wear a dress that fits properly. Buy the size that fits the biggest part of you and get the rest taken in. Much preferable to shoehorning your way into a size smaller.
